project giraffe

Hello. This is Project Giraffe.

A couple of years ago, a young artist of 14 years drew giraffes. Not because they were her favourite animal. She simply liked the shape of the head and was fascinated by its anatomy and the lights and shadows.

It all really began, however, when a classmate asked her to draw some type of camel/giraffe.. a mammal with a long tongue, anyway, with said tongue wrapped around its nose/mouth/muzzle.

So our young artist stole a photo somewhere and drew the giraffe. She gave her classmate the original drawing but kept a photocopy. A few weeks later, she had an idea..

After two years, more than 60 variations of one single giraffe-head-outline had been called into existence. Another two years and a lot more very different art later, the artist decided to take up the giraffe challenge again.

The "old" ones look exactly like that: most have been lying around behind shelves for years and had to be dusted off very thoroughly.

But other than that, the artist was actually rather astounded at what she had been capable of in such early years, and that's what this is about. She wants to see what will become of the giraffes at this point on her "path".

look at her other work here, random tidbits here, and her "diary thing, but cooler" here.

goldenjewnicorn asked: I'm asking all my followers to recommend me good books to read because (a) you follow me even thought I don't deserve you, (b) I feel like I should know you better, (c) who doesn't like getting messages in their inbox? and (d) i like reading books sometimes and this is one of those times.

aww:) ok, here goes: moon palace and the mystery of chance by paul auster. or everything by paul auster.

I know it seems insane, but it’s true, it’s actually happening, I drew about ten of these today, and I’m sharing 3 of them with you. I haven’t drawn in a long time, so this feels good. We’ll see where it leads. (if it leads anywhere) (right now it’s just the ‘starting to draw again’ thing) (practice practice practice practice) (yay)

hey guys. kill the details!
Yesterday I got stuck in this phone-camera-photo-editing rage wherein I blurred almost every photo I have ever taken with my phone camera.
It was instant gratification and raised a bunch of interesting inner debates about the way we (I) see the world, what makes a photo a photo, and what’s more, even more admiration for Gerhard Richter than ever.
Opposed to project giraffe, this is in fact something I can see myself keeping up on a more than regular basis - my phone camera is with me everywhere I go, and chronicling my view of life is something that’s always relevant in my work.
So please, take a look and feel free to tell me what you think!

this has nothing to do with giraffes.. (I’ll get to those again, I promise!) (there are still tons that haven’t even been scanned yet, they’ll have to be unearthed first though) but as I’m moving to Berlin in a mere 2 weeks.. (yes!) to become a PROFESSIONAL artist.. I felt like doing new business cards, here they are. I spent the day at the printers’ yesterday for these and a couple other things and, when asked if I liked a day like this at the Orange Office, replied with a fervent “yes!” - not the reaction they had been hoping for, kind of like “oh great, there’s no hope for her - she’s one of us” :D

butterflyarrow asked: Howdy giraffe lady (my mum likes giraffes), I totally remember your blog it's one of the most original ones around! Making any new drawings lately? I must say, giraffes are definitely one of the most unique and interesting creatures around. I'll have to recommend you next time round (eh, if you don't mind anyway), I just think your page is really sweet. I would have probably mentioned that at some point, without the promise of the message btw :) thanks for stopping by!

oh hey thanks! I completely overlooked the messages thing here :P well, I started this with the goal of posting at least all of the already-existent ones, if not hopefully some new ones. I never really reached it, but do hope sometime soon I’ll get around to really doing new ones, just because it would be really interesting to see what I would make of them now (the last ones are at least 2 years old)

Thanks again, and I wouldn’t mind a recommendation btw :)
